On-site Reclaimed Stone Cropping: Titchmarsh

Sustainable On-Site Stone Cropping & Dressing in Titchmarsh, Northamptonshire — Case Study

We were engaged to carry out on-site stone cropping and dressing at a farm conversion project in Titchmarsh, Northamptonshire, where traditional buildings were being transformed into multiple dwellings.

The client requested that we processed the large pile of reclaimed stone that they had on-site into useable building stone, coursed, ready for the stonemasons to lay.

This project demonstrates how our specialist stone dressing service can support sustainable construction through practical material reuse.

The stone barn was constructed from the reclaimed limestone on-site in Titchmarsh.
The stone barn extension was constructed from the Blisworth Limestone from demolished buildings on site. With our on-site cropping service, we were able to recycle the existing stone which the stonemasons then laid for the new development.

The Sustainability Challenge

Construction and renovation projects often generate stone that is discarded simply because it is irregular in size or unsuitable in its existing form. In this case, valuable natural stone would have been lost to crushing despite being structurally sound.

The goal was to:

  • Repurpose the existing stone for new masonry work
  • Avoid unnecessary waste
  • Reduce the need for newly quarried materials
  • Maintain visual consistency across the development

Our On-Site Solution

Our team attended site equipped with specialist stone croppers and dressing tools, allowing us to process the material directly at the farm conversion location.

Stone Cropping

  • Resized reclaimed stone to workable dimensions
  • Removed damaged or uneven edges
  • Prepared units suitable for construction use

Stone Dressing

  • Finished faces and edges to specification
  • Ensured compatibility with surrounding masonry
  • Delivered consistent appearance for the extension build

By working on site, we eliminated transport delays and allowed the masonry team to use prepared stone immediately as required.

Our specialist stone splitters are the same as we use in our own yard! We have diesel, electric and petrol powerpacks that allow us to use our stone cropping machinery on site, removing the need to expensive haulage.

Benefits of Reusing Stone

Choosing to reuse existing stone rather than purchasing new materials offered clear advantages:

Environmental Benefits

  • Reduced construction waste
  • Lower demand for quarrying and material extraction
  • Decreased transport emissions
  • More sustainable use of natural resources

Practical & Commercial Benefits

  • Cost savings compared with sourcing new stone
  • Faster availability of prepared materials
  • Better visual match with existing structures
  • Preservation of local character and authenticity

Reclaimed stone often delivers a natural weathered appearance that cannot easily be replicated with newly supplied material.

One of the perks of the job! Coming across these beautiful hand carved date stones is always a pleasure. We cleaned her up and she was reused in a promiment place on the project. This one is dated 1875.

Project Outcome

Through skilled on-site cropping and dressing, stone that would otherwise have been discarded was successfully integrated into the new house extension.

The result was:

  • A sustainable material solution
  • Efficient project workflow
  • High-quality masonry-ready stone
  • A finish consistent with the surrounding converted buildings

This project highlights how early consideration of stone reuse and on-site dressing services can improve both environmental impact and construction efficiency.

Bays setup for us to course the re-cropped stone into.
The client asked that we coursed the stone into bags as it was re-cropped. This meant the stonemasons saved a substantial amount of time having to size it themselves resulting in reduced laying costs.
